maintenance

Although our ecosystem is very low maintenance some work is involved to properly maintain your water garden. One of those things is a proper spring clean-out. Our spring clean-out consists of a 1-3 man crew (based upon size of pond) that drains the entire pond with a clean-out pump, before we begin lightly power washing the entire pond & stream, all your fish are carefully captured and staged in a temporary holding tank that has existing pond water in it. Then all the Biofalls filters are power washed along with the skimmer pad. While the filters are drying we power wash the media bag (lava rock or BioBalls) to remove any dead unwanted algae build up and check the mesh bag for rot. Any components are usually replaced if needed, such as the filter pads, media bags, or non-functioning light fixtures. Most customers have us replace all the underwater bulbs as a precaution while we are cleaning the pond and we highly recommend it. While one person is washing the pond another is typically hand picking the bottom to remove any leaves, sticks or other organic debris that settled throughout the winter, also all your aquatic plants will be pruned of their dead leaves and flowers. Once the system is totally cleaned out we begin to fill your feature and dechlorinated the water. Once the pond is 1/2 to 3/4 full we will then float your fish in the water to acclimate them to the new water temperature. The fish then get released into the system and the waterfall is turned on. All of our service is done on a time and materials basis and a typical clean-out can range anywhere from $250 on up to $2,500, it all depends on how well things were maintained throughout the season and how large your system is.

Throughout the rest of the season it really is pretty easy to maintain the feature, an occasional beneficial bacterial treatment, keep the skimmer net cleaned out once and a while, and the rest of the time just sit back and enjoy the wonders of nature.
